Role playing games have long been popular and have been produced on a small scale. Over the years massive multiplayer online role-playing games, also known as MMORPG, have developed with immense success. These games cross the RPG games with multiplayer capability and have now crossed the globe in their popularity. MMORPG allows players to create and inhabit the body and world of their own avatar, controlling their actions and decisions within the game and interacting with others who are doing the same thing.
This type of gaming allows for high levels of social interaction. Whilst it may seem like players are antisocial, hiding in their rooms, this is not the case. Players are able to communicate with each other through the game. In addition to this, these games tend to need an element of teamwork in sections of the game play. In these teams, players take on specific roles such as protecting or healing other players.
Multiplayer games have been around for a while with Mazewar and MUD1 being the first from 1974 and 1978 respectively. Over the next few decades the industry increased its scope and today there are a plethora of MMORPG available such as Guild Wars, Final Fantasy, and of course the number one game, World of Warcraft.
World of Warcraft is the single most successful MMORPG and dominates the market. Released in 2004, it is actually the fourth in a series of games from the Warcraft world. With over 100 million subscriptions acquired after its release, it holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG. Over time the characters have become more developed, with better design, more skills and general improvements to the character of the particular avatar created by the player. This has in turn increased the levels of realism in the game, which helps to take people to another world. It is no wonder that this type of game is so popular.
